01

What it is

A perinatal ultrasound is a more detailed scan than a routine OB ultrasound, performed by maternal-fetal medicine specialists with advanced training.

02

Why it is different

These scans answer specific questions about anatomy, growth, or risk. Equipment and training are tuned for subtle findings your OB might want a closer look at.

03

Is it safe?

Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation. We follow ALARA principles, keeping exposure as low as reasonably achievable for every exam.

04

Why you may need one

A referral may follow a screening result, a maternal medical condition, a higher-risk pregnancy, or a question your OB wants to investigate further. Even in routine pregnancies, our exams give you and your OB a detailed look at your baby.

Tap a milestone

A 3D look at your baby, on the house.

If timing and positioning allow, we'll capture a 3D portrait of your baby and send you home with the images. 3D images come out best in the third trimester, when your baby has more peripheral fat to soften the features. There's no charge for it.

WHEN IT HAPPENS

We'll try at every ultrasound, though images come out best in the third trimester when your baby has more peripheral fat to soften the features.

WHAT YOU TAKE HOME

A short set of 3D portrait images. Positioning and amniotic fluid affect what's possible, and we'll always do our best.

A few small things help us help you.

Most patients find the visit straightforward. These small steps make sure we can give you the most informative scan possible.

01

Arrival time

Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early. This gives us time to confirm your information and complete any paperwork before your scan begins.

02

Bring your records

Photo ID, insurance card, your referral if required, prior ultrasound reports, and a list of current medications. If you have past imaging on disc, please bring it.

03

What to wear

Wear comfortable two-piece clothing so it is easy to expose your abdomen for the scan. Avoid jumpsuits or one-piece outfits when possible.
